Wedding DIY

by Raquel Elekes from A Timeless Memory

This is it! You are getting married!!

You have the groom, you have the ring and you have the place and have set the date.

Now it’s time for the details.

2012 is all about the DIY.

In this economy, everyone is looking for a way to stay on budget and yet create a look that is personal and will reflect who you are as a couple. Stuck for ideas? Start with your parents and grandparents Wedding Albums. If you see something you like, kick it up a notch and add a modern twist to their design. Create an inspiration board. It’s a big trend for 2012  and any Wedding Planner or Specialist will tell you that it is one of the best ways to keep track of all your ideas and help you to tie it all together visually!  Acrylic ice cubes, beads, glass sea shells, even fresh fruit like lemons and limes are great ideas for filling vases, glass containers and all around your centerpiece!

Fresh cut individual flowers or flowering vines placed directly on the table will create a unique and stunning look to the entire room.

Add laced up wallpaper strips to your pillar candles. Ribbons, bows, swags of greenery, even Chinese lanterns and balloons are added touches that you are going to see gracing all of the Reception Halls.

Hand made favors are a big trend that we will see more and more of  in upcoming weddings.

You don’t have to be a serious “crafter” to create something personal. The whole idea is to say thank you to your guests from the two of you. If that means saying it in a Candy Bar, then you are in luck!

The Candy Bar is another trend that is picking up speed and becoming more and more popular. The secret to a Good Candy Bar is not only the display, but the candy you choose and what you chose to put the candy in for your guests to take home.

The candies should be ones that you and your groom both agree on and like. Spend sometime thinking about this one.

If at all possible try and find candies and treats in colors that fit the decor of your room. Use containers in all different shapes and sizes (unless you are renting the containers, make sure to get them all back at the end of the evening) even colored glass is available .

You will be seeing such as Fushia, deep Red, Turquoise, Coral, Black and White, Yellow, Slate Grey, and Purple, all done in monochromatic design using different sizes and shapes to add dimension to your room, and Tulle. Tons of Tulle and draping! Staircases, doorways, arches and chair backs all draped with white twinkle lights and no shortage of candles creating beautiful romantic and fairytale lighting.

Of course now that we are heading into the Winter Season, it’s not too late to add popular touches such as a Hot Chocolate or Coffee Stations. Gingerbread men and women individually wrapped and personalized from the two of you make fantastic Winter favors for your guests. Maybe think about adding just a splash of blue Curacao into your champagne to create more of an icy cold feeling.

If you are having a candy bar at your Winter Wedding, white candies , white chocolates and light blue M&M’s or other treats that have a minty flavor all help to add to the Winter feel you may be going for this season.

Holly and Ivy are beautiful ways to add your greenery, with or without the berries. Trees are once again a very popular way to celebrate the season! Don’t want a Christmas looking tree? Then don’t have one! Sparkling White Birch trees are a wonderful alternative through out your reception and Thanks to Princess Kate, Trees lining the aisle at your ceremony are a romantic addition. Apple, lemon, orange or cherry trees have pretty flowers nestled in amongst the branches. For Winter Birch trees can be spray painted sparkling white, used to line the aisle during the ceremony and then transported to the reception and placed ON and around the dance floor and scattered through out the room. A few flocked pine trees thrown into the mix, add some blue or icy purple up lighting  to help create a winter wonderland effect and have you and your guests dancing amongst the trees!

Use your imagination and create a unique and wonderfully special memory for both you and your guests that will stay with them for a very, very long time.

If you are stuck for ideas or inspiration or maybe you have never had to do any DIY (do it yourself) before and just don’t know what or how, call your Wedding Planner. If you don’t have one, call one. Most of us are experts at design, creation and best of all, we know all about the DIY projects and can be of tremendous help!

Enjoy the planning.
